These magnificent sculptures are a few examples from my private collection of clay animals created by ordinary garden and domestic workers. An intense interest in the creative capabilities of ordinary man has inspired this collection. Childhood reminiscence, closeness to the earth, aspiration and tradition are captured in these unpretentious and sincere sculptures.
Traditionally the clay animal was seen as a mere toy created by children who had very little access to commercially manufactured toys. Civilization however has infiltrated into every aspect of the South African society. Today the young in rural areas make steel wire toys or watch TV. Clay oxen may therefore be treasured as part of our historical wealth shared by black and white.
