Layered Lasercuts

A few examples

Paper cutting has been described as craft, folk art, pastime, vocation an evening's fun and a life's work. It is decorative, sometimes functional and often framed as art. Paper cutting in all its various forms is an ancient art that has fascinated people from countries such as Japan, Germany, Poland and Holland for more than two thousand years.

Traditional paper cutting offers many rewards while making few demands. Basic skills are easy to learn, and the requited tools are few: scissors, knives, perhaps a pencil or two and steady hands. Some sophisticated patterns take astounding ingenuity and skill to design and cut and  can sometimes require weeks or even months to complete.

Fascinated by the above as well as an in saturable desire to experiment and investigate new possibilities and art techniques I was inspired to utilize the laser as cutting tool. Laser cutting has been extensively used in the commercial field for cutting materials such as perspex and a variety of different boards.

Elevating the inimitable possibilities of laser cutting into the graphic art scene has been my sole aim in producing a vast variety of art works. As with any graphic art medium a single one-off artwork or a limited edition can be created.

Though the actual cutting is relatively fast, the conceptualization, creating and preparatory work for a laser cut is very time consuming and entails a thorough knowledge of design as well as a high degree of competence in executing thereof.

Further experimentation lead to even more complex designs and layered laser cuts. Here technology and artistic flair are blended into an exciting visual experience. Although cut by laser, each artwork is individually assembled. Choice of paper and colour combinations make each artwork special and unique.

The possibilities of paper laser cutting are exciting and may be regarded as a new fledgling in the graphic art family.
